Intel or Apple Silicon? Identify Your Mac

Check About This Mac to see whether your computer uses Apple silicon or an Intel processor.

Read the chip or processor name

  1. Open About This Mac

Choose Apple menu → About This Mac. The window layout varies by macOS version.

  2. Look for Chip or Processor

Chip followed by an Apple chip name means Apple silicon. Processor followed by Intel means an Intel Mac. You do not need to infer this from the computer’s year or appearance.

  3. Download the matching app

On Downloads, choose macOS · Apple Silicon or macOS · Intel to match that result.

What to look for on your Mac
